Governor Greg Gianforte has recognized two Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) employees for their actions during a winter emergency in Mineral County. Corporal Emily Verbanac and Corporal Megan Vinyard, both from MDT’s Motor Carrier Services Division, received the Outstanding Service Award after they responded to a crash on January 23, 2026.
According to the governor’s office, Verbanac and Vinyard were working at the Haugan Weigh Station when they learned of a single-vehicle injury accident on Interstate 90. With no patrol vehicle available, they used a personal vehicle to reach the scene alongside deputies from the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arrival, they found two unconscious people inside a running car stuck in a snowbank. The driver’s foot was still pressing on the accelerator. Deputies worked to access the vehicle while Verbanac and Vinyard helped remove the occupants and started lifesaving measures, including using a defibrillator and administering Narcan.
“When Corporal Verbanac and Corporal Vinyard arrived at the scene and found two unconscious passengers in a snowbound vehicle, they did not hesitate,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Their quick thinking, training, and decisive action in extreme winter conditions saved two lives.”
During a ceremony in Missoula, Governor Gianforte presented each officer with a letter of recognition and a Montana state flag that had been flown over the State Capitol.
The Outstanding Service Award is given to state employees who demonstrate exceptional service beyond their regular duties.
“Public servants like Emily and Megan represent the very best of Montana,” Gov. Gianforte said. “We are grateful for their dedication and proud to recognize their service to our state.”
