Governor Greg Gianforte visited Bonner Elementary School to honor a student initiative that led to the establishment of March 3 as Third Grader Day in Montana. The visit highlighted the civic engagement of third-grade student Blakely Wagner, who was inspired after reading about a similar effort by a student in another state.

“When Blakely read about another student speaking up and getting involved in another state, she decided to do the same here in Montana,” said Governor Gianforte. “That kind of initiative and leadership is exactly what civic engagement looks like. I was proud to recognize her effort and the example she’s setting for students across our state.”

Blakely Wagner contacted both Governor Gianforte and Lieutenant Governor Kristen Juras with her request to have March 3 proclaimed as Third Grader Day. During his visit, the governor recognized Blakely’s outreach, read and signed the official proclamation, and discussed with students the value of civic involvement.

“Thank you so much, this is so exciting,” said Blakely Wagner during the event. “It feels nice and I feel like all third graders would love it.”

The proclamation can be viewed on the governor’s website.
