Carroll College has named James (Jim) Carney as its next Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer, with his appointment set to begin on September 8, 2025.

Carney previously worked at Carroll College as Assistant Director for Community Living and also taught as an adjunct faculty member. His return marks a continuation of his career in higher education administration.

“We are excited to welcome Jim Carney back to Carroll,” said Dr. Jennifer Glowienka, co-president of Carroll College. “His extensive financial leadership experience, combined with his understanding of our community, will be a tremendous asset as we continue to plan for the college’s future and advance our mission.”

Carney brings over 17 years of experience in financial leadership roles. Since 2013, he has served as Chief Financial Officer for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena and was appointed Chancellor in 2022. In these positions, he managed financial oversight and implemented updated systems across budgeting, finance, IT, risk management, insurance, investments, real estate, and construction projects. He also held fiscal leadership positions at the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services and worked in nonprofit management and corporate accounting. Earlier in his career, Carney volunteered with the Peace Corps in Guizhou, China.

Colleagues have noted that Carney is recognized for creating positive team environments focused on cooperation and trust. His approach emphasizes aligning financial strategies with organizational missions to promote growth and transparency.

During the search process for this position at Carroll College, stakeholders cited Carney’s ability to connect financial planning with institutional goals. They also highlighted his collaborative style rooted in consensus building and his awareness of current challenges facing higher education.

“I’m truly honored to return to the Carroll community and participate in its rich legacy of academic excellence and community impact,” said Carney. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with dedicated colleagues as we work together to steward the college’s financial future and support its mission of shaping the minds and hearts of tomorrow’s leaders.”

Carney holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Seattle University and a Master’s degree in Public Service from Marquette University. He will succeed Lori Peterson ’87 who is retiring after 32 years at Carroll College—including 15 years as CFO.
