Lewis and Clark County Government: Origin of the Mattstaff Fire

0Comments

This is the origin of the Mattstaff Fire. The road at the bottom of the picture is Spokane Creek Road. Expand the picture so you can see the plowed fire line on the right. Gary Dobler and his son saw the fire from their farm and both raced to get tractors and tilling equipment. They plowed right in front of this quickly spreading fire to stop the advancement to the south in the wheat field. There is no way they could get in front of it. Also, I note this is their wheat field. Sometimes common people like you and me do heroic acts, this is one of them. Sheriff Leo C. Dutton.
