Montana residents who qualify for food and cash assistance can now use their benefits to make online purchases at Walmart.com. This development is part of a federal initiative aimed at increasing access to essential goods through online shopping.
"We are excited to be able to offer this convenient method of shopping to Montana families," said Adam Meier, Director of the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS). "While Walmart is our initial launch, we will work on expanding this program with additional online retailers in the future."
Currently, thousands of households benefit from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), using electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards for eligible purchases statewide. The SNAP Online Purchasing Program began in 2019 as an eight-state pilot in New York and has since expanded nationwide.
To utilize this service, individuals must create an account on Walmart.com and register their EBT card. Purchases can begin 24 hours after registration without a minimum purchase requirement. As the first retailer offering SNAP online in Montana, Walmart paves the way for other companies like Amazon, which is expected to accept Montana EBT cards soon.
During checkout, users should select EBT as their payment method and enter their card pin. Non-eligible items or fees require an alternate payment form. Refunds will be credited back to the original card used. Any issues encountered while using EBT cards on Walmart.com should be directed to the helpline at 1-866-850-1556.
Retailers interested in joining the program can find more information through official channels.
