The Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS), in collaboration with the Montana Department of Justice and the Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, is calling for nominations to fill positions on four regional Elder Justice Councils. These councils were established by Governor Greg Gianforte as a response to rising reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation affecting senior citizens and adults with disabilities.

According to DPHHS data, elder abuse cases have surged in recent years. In 2020 alone, 4,500 Montanans fell victim to such abuse—marking an increase of nearly 30% since 2018. The trend continued upward in 2021 with 4,906 reported cases.

Governor Gianforte emphasized the importance of addressing this issue: “Heartbreaking cases of elder abuse are on the rise, and we must reverse this tragic trend. We must protect vulnerable Montanans from abuse and exploitation, and Elder Justice Councils will play an important role to that end,” he stated. He further encouraged residents to combat elder abuse by applying for council membership.

These interdisciplinary councils aim to enhance agency and community efforts through educational initiatives as well as prevention and intervention programs designed to safeguard Montana’s elderly and disabled populations.

Governor Gianforte plans to appoint at least seven members from both public and private sectors to each council. Ideal candidates will possess experience in fields such as criminal or civil law, investigation, banking, accounting, healthcare, insurance, financial planning, or senior advocacy. Members will receive a daily stipend along with travel expenses.

Montanans interested in contributing to the Elder Justice Councils' mission can apply online at https://svc.mt.gov/gov/boards/docs/Application-for-Appointment.pdf. Applicants should specify their interest in one of the regional councils available.

For more information or inquiries about the application process, individuals may contact the Senior and Long Term Care Division at (406) 444-4077 or reach out to Hannah Slusser, Governor Gianforte’s Boards and Appointments Advisor at (406) 444-3111.
