The Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) recently recognized several Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel across Montana for their exceptional service. The awards ceremony took place at the Capitol Rotunda, with attendees including representatives from various EMS organizations and Lt. Governor Kristen Juras.

Governor Gianforte declared May 21-27 as Emergency Medical Services Week, with a special focus on EMS for Children Day on May 24. DPHHS Director Charlie Brereton emphasized the vital role of EMS workers, noting that in 2022 alone, they responded to over 130,000 service requests.

Among those honored was Jack Berg from Meagher County Volunteer Ambulance, who received the Volunteer EMS Provider of the Year Award. Eva Kerr, a nurse and fellow volunteer, nominated Berg for his long-standing dedication since 1984. "Jack has been a volunteer EMT in Meagher County since 1984," Kerr said. "He never stops learning and has tremendous skill."

Jerry Lyons was awarded the Career EMS Provider of the Year Award for his work with Montana Medical Transport. Joe Metcalf praised Lyons' dedication throughout his 35-year career: "Jerry has dedicated his 35-year career to providing EMS care to his community."

Jefferson Valley EMS received the EMS Service of the Year Award after being nominated by former patient Cari Ray. Ray recounted how their prompt response saved her life during a medical emergency: "I almost lost my life that evening and owe the biggest debt of gratitude to the Jefferson Valley EMS crew."

Jennifer LaCross from Gallatin County 911 was named Dispatcher of the Year for her exemplary performance in emergencies. Tim Martindale Jr., Director of Gallatin County 911, highlighted her contributions: "During Jennifer’s time with Gallatin County 911, she has unknowingly saved many lives."

The Miles City Police Department was recognized as EMS Supporter of the Year for their collaboration with local EMS services. Battalion Chief Sarah Lewin commended their efforts: "Miles City PD have gone the extra mile to care for Miles City’s patients and community."

Lastly, Jason Mahoney received the EMS for Children Supporter Award for his work in pediatric emergency care education across Montana. Kelly Little from DPHHS acknowledged Mahoney's impact: "Jason has been instrumental in bringing pediatric specific education to EMS agencies across the state."

These awards underscore the critical contributions made by Montana's first responders and support personnel in ensuring public safety.
