Today, Chairman Matt Rosendale of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Technology Modernization conducted his final hearing as chairman. The hearing, titled "Modernizing The VA: Lessons Learned in the 118th Congress," reviewed the subcommittee's work over the past two years. The focus was on addressing challenges with major Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) projects, such as Electronic Health Record Modernization, Financial Management Business Transformation, and the Digital G.I. Bill rollout. These initiatives have encountered significant obstacles and have incurred substantial costs to taxpayers.
Chairman Rosendale emphasized the importance of updating VA's IT systems. He stated, "The potential benefits of modernizing VA’s IT systems are undeniable." He further elaborated that with effective IT strategies, the VA could improve health care and benefits delivery for veterans. However, he cautioned against repeating past mistakes that have led to dysfunctional systems despite heavy expenditures.
Rosendale also highlighted a critical stance against large-scale IT projects at the VA. "VA should not be doing IT megaprojects," he asserted. "They always turn into black holes, sucking billions of taxpayer dollars into contractors’ pockets."
