HELENA, Mont. – Mayor Wilmot Collins of Helena, Montana, has declared May 2024 as “National Cities, Towns, and Villages Month” during the City Commission Meeting held on Monday, April 22. The proclamation aims to recognize the significance of local government service and is part of a nationwide initiative led by the National League of Cities (NLC).
According to the proclamation, “local governments are the bedrock of American democracy, providing 336 million residents with the most accountable, responsive, inclusive, ethical, and transparent government in the world.” The document also highlights that “from the nation’s smallest villages to its largest cities, America’s local governments have been essential in transforming the United States of America into the greatest, most influential nation in world history.”
The National Cities, Towns, and Villages Month is a component of the centennial celebrations of the National League of Cities, which was established in 1924. The NLC currently offers resources to local leaders to assist in governance and advocates for cities, towns, and villages in Washington, DC. Helena is a proud member of the National League of Cities.
Clarence Anthony, the CEO and Executive Director of the NLC, expressed, “NLC’s historic 100th anniversary is a chance to reflect on the contributions local governments have made, look ahead to the next 100 years, and thank the mayors, city councilmembers, and staff who have dedicated themselves to leading our communities.” He further added, “Stepping up to serve your community is a sacrifice, and oftentimes a thankless one. So let us honor our local public servants.”
In honor of the National League of Cities' 100th anniversary, numerous local governments across the country will be issuing similar proclamations throughout May 2024. Additionally, on May 22, bells will be rung to commemorate this special occasion.
