Today, Congressman Matt Rosendale (MT-02) expressed disagreement with a recent ruling by U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Judge Tanya Chutkan. The ruling addresses Montanan calls for expedited environmental reviews of the Bull Mountain Mine, which cannot begin extracting coal until the Department of the Interior’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement completes permitting. This process is now delayed until May 2026.
“The review required for continued extraction of coal at the Bull Mountain Mine has been unnecessarily lengthy and undoubtedly political,” said Rep. Rosendale. “Instead of helping the Treasure State economy boom, this misguided ruling by Judge Chutkan will only continue to hinder local growth by delaying federal permitting. It’s time to finish the paperwork and get Bull Mountain back to full operating potential!”
