The Carroll community mourns the passing of Roy Simperman, a notable alumnus from the class of 1962. Over his lifetime, Simperman contributed significantly to the college, donating more than $9 million over 46 years. His support has been instrumental in expanding student opportunities and enhancing campus resources.
Simperman's contributions touched various aspects of Carroll College. He invested over $1 million in upgrading science and technology facilities at Simperman Hall, ensuring students had access to modern equipment. In 2009, he established scholarships worth more than $2.8 million for math, science, and nursing students, benefiting over 332 individuals pursuing degrees in these fields.
Additionally, he continued the Corette Scholarship Fund in honor of his late wife, Diane Corette Simperman. The Roy F. Simperman Angel Fund was created in 2017 as a retention fund to assist students facing financial difficulties; it helped 42 students remain enrolled between 2017 and 2024.
Simperman also played a role in creating a partnership with the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii through the Keck Observatory Fellowship, providing Carroll students with exclusive post-graduate research opportunities.
His most significant contribution was $4.2 million towards renovating the Simperman Learning Commons & Corette Library into a state-of-the-art facility designed to foster collaboration and innovation.
Roy's belief in Catholic education stemmed from his own transformative experience at Carroll College. He worked through college by driving trucks during summers and playing music on weekends before embarking on a successful career in science, technology, and business.
A memorial service will be held for Roy on Saturday, March 1st at All Saints Chapel with Bishop Vetter celebrating Mass. The service will begin with a viewing at 9 a.m., followed by Mass at 10 a.m., and conclude with a reception from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Corette Library and Simperman Learning Commons.
Roy's legacy will continue to impact Carroll College for generations as his generosity profoundly shaped its future.
