The City of Helena Fire Department (HFD) has deployed three firefighters to California to support wildland fire efforts. Captain Robbie Bennett, Captain Louis Menghini, and firefighter/paramedic Jeffrie O’Neill departed on Monday, September 16, for a 14-day deployment, with additional days allocated for travel. The team drove HFD’s Type 5 wildland engine.

The request for mutual aid came through the Federal Emergency Management Assistance Compact. Before accepting such requests, HFD evaluates staff availability, current local fire conditions, and overall resources. The department is compensated for personnel costs and vehicle use during these deployments. Additionally, the experience gained by firefighters in these operations is valuable for enhancing the department's preparedness to combat wildland fires in Helena.
