Lt. Governor Kristen Juras and Charlie Brereton, Director of the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS), recognized Direct Support Professionals (DSP) from various Montana regions at a recent Developmental Disabilities Program (DDP) conference held at the DoubleTree by Hilton.
"Today, we recognize individuals who provide invaluable support to Montanans with disabilities in communities all across the state," stated Lt. Gov. Juras. "These professionals are truly unsung heroes who are dedicated to this vital profession and the people they serve."
The conference, sponsored by DPHHS, the Montana Council for Developmental Disabilities, and the Montana Association of Community Disability Services, ran from September 12 to 14. DSPs play a crucial role in providing direct care or in-home support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
"It's an honor to celebrate these amazing individuals, inspiring to hear their personal stories, and learn how they are truly making a difference in the lives of so many," said Brereton.
Award recipients included Valerie Cummings from Glen-Wood Inc., Jay Miller from Quality Life Concepts, Tanaya Heidt from Bridges of Montana, Joaquin Jesus from West Mont, Mary Ulrich posthumously from Spring Meadow Resources, Inc., and Elliott Adams representing self-direct services.
Montanans were invited to nominate outstanding DSPs who excel in person-centeredness, cultivating relationships, demonstrating leadership, and innovation. Over 100 nominations were received.
Lindsey Carter of DDP noted it was the first time in over ten years that such a conference was held. It brought together about 175 providers, case managers, families, and DPHHS staff for training and collaboration. The event coincided with National DSP Recognition Week from September 10-16.
