WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Matt Rosendale (MT-02) led a coalition of lawmakers in sending a letter to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Denis McDonough expressing objections to the VA's plans to expand in vitro fertilization (IVF) services. The letter questions the taxpayer subsidy of IVF, the uncertainty surrounding additional embryos, and the potential violation of existing laws by the VA in implementing this expansion.
In the letter, Rep. Rosendale raised concerns about the ethical implications of the IVF expansion, stating, "An IVF embryo is the earliest stage of life that exists outside of the womb." He also highlighted the questionable legality of the decision, pointing out that previous legislation had been introduced regarding IVF expansion at the VA.
House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good (VA-05) supported Rep. Rosendale's stance, criticizing the Biden Administration for prioritizing this agenda over veteran healthcare needs. Chairman Good remarked, "The VA should be focused on providing timely, quality healthcare to the millions of veterans in our country who have served bravely."
Congressional Family Caucus Chairwoman Mary Miller (IL-15) echoed these sentiments, suggesting an alternative use of funds. She stated, "With the foster care system in crisis, we should divert these funds to encourage military families to adopt children who are desperately longing for a loving home."
The lawmakers' letter to the VA emphasizes the need for accountability and transparency in the decision-making process regarding healthcare services for veterans.
