The City of Helena is preparing for its annual prescribed burning activities within the city's open lands. These activities, which involve igniting brush piles in the city's forest fuel treatment units, are scheduled to occur from December 1 to April 15, depending on weather conditions.
This season, the focus will be on burning slash piles located on the west face of Mt. Ascension and Mount Helena. The areas adjacent to After Shock Trail, Archery Range Trail, and Entertainment Trails on Mt. Ascension will see activity, as well as areas near Acropolis Trail, Diretissima Trail, Dump Out Trail, Mount Helena Ridge, McKelvey Trail, and Prairie Trail on Mount Helena.
The city's forest fuel treatment units cover approximately 125 acres. The burn piles were created during sanitation and thinning treatments conducted from 2020 through 2024. The burning process will be monitored to ensure compliance with safety and air quality standards.
Maps of the city's open lands trail system are available at www.helenamt.gov/open-lands/. Those interested can review copies of the Prescribed Burn Policy for Helena Open Lands during normal office hours at the Parks and Recreation Department in Helena.
