The Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) is organizing a virtual panel discussion on October 27 at noon to mark National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This event, held every October, celebrates the contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce and economy.

The panel will focus on the documentary "Hearts of Glass," which highlights employment opportunities and community impact. The film documents the first 15 months of Vertical Harvest's operations in Jackson, Wyoming, showcasing a hydroponic greenhouse offering inclusive employment for individuals with disabilities. Panelists will include Jennifer Tennican, the director of "Hearts of Glass," as well as current and former employees of Vertical Harvest and Montana business representatives.

Montanans are invited to watch "Hearts of Glass" online as part of the celebration. The documentary intertwines the company's launch with personal stories from employees with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

DPHHS's Vocational Rehabilitation and Blind Services program assists adult Montanans and youth with disabilities in finding competitive integrated employment. This program currently supports 2,000 individuals statewide by providing career opportunities aligned with their goals.

This year's NDEAM theme, “America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion,” underscores the significance of ensuring full access to employment and community involvement for people with disabilities during COVID-19 recovery efforts.

Key participants in the event include Chanda Hermanson from DPHHS Disability Employment and Transitions Division, Jennifer Tennican, Caroline Croft Estay from Vertical Harvest, Stephanie Sosa, Kathy Morse from Miles City Town Pump, and Nathan Weidner from Glendive Town Pump. The discussion will be held virtually via Zoom.
