In a ceremony at the State Capitol, Governor Greg Gianforte joined Montana families to mark Adoption Month. The governor emphasized the significance of adoption, stating, “Adoption is a precious, life-changing gift.” He highlighted his administration's efforts to support families by introducing a $5,000 adoption tax credit in the state budget. “The high cost of adoption shouldn’t be an obstacle for families to adopt a child,” he added.
Earlier this month, before unveiling his "Budget for Montana Families," Governor Gianforte proclaimed November as Adoption Month to promote adoption and assist children in finding permanent homes. His budget also includes a $1,200 child tax credit for children under six years old.
Charlie Brereton, Director of the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS), underscored the importance of providing stable family environments for children. “Every child deserves the security and stability of a permanent family,” he said. Brereton noted that DPHHS offers specialized training for foster and adoptive parents throughout Montana.

This month has seen various initiatives across Butte, Missoula, Billings, Kalispell, and Miles City to raise awareness about adoption. On average, DPHHS facilitates around 350 adoptions annually across Montana. Brereton expressed optimism about helping prospective parents provide permanent homes for children: “We know there are many amazing parents who want to provide a child with a forever home, and it’s our goal to help make that happen.”
