In alignment with National Public Health Week, the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) announced that its Public Health and Safety Division (PHSD) has earned the designation of Healthy People 2030 Champion. This recognition comes from the federal Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP).
The Healthy People initiative, now in its fifth iteration as Healthy People 2030, sets decade-long objectives to enhance health across the nation. The initiative acknowledges both public and private entities striving towards these goals.
PHSD Administrator Todd Harwell expressed his team's dedication: “Our staff are committed to improving and protecting the health of Montanans by advancing conditions for healthy living. This recognition demonstrates our commitment to the health of Montanans in our daily work.”
ODPHP Director RADM Paul Reed, MD, praised Montana's efforts: "ODPHP is thrilled to recognize Montana for its work to support the Healthy People 2030 vision. Only by collaborating with partners nationwide can we achieve Healthy People 2030's overarching goals and objectives."
Montana’s State Health Improvement Plan aligns with many Healthy People 2030 objectives. These are showcased on a dashboard titled “Community Health Insights in the 406,” which launched in September 2022. The platform allows users to explore data related to various health topics similar to those outlined in Healthy People 2030.
The dashboard includes data from multiple sources such as Montana Vital Statistics, Montana Cancer Registry, and others. By July 2023, it will feature profiles at state, regional, and county levels. Further enhancements are expected by late 2023 with national datasets like Census data being integrated.
State Epidemiologist Laura Williamson emphasized their achievement: "We are proud to be recognized as a Healthy People 2030 Champion due to our data-driven approaches to improving health. We work for a healthier Montana every day alongside numerous other public health organizations throughout the state.”
