Today, Congressman Matt Rosendale (MT-02) voiced his opposition to a bill that would transfer Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium from the National Park Service to the D.C. government without fair compensation for U.S. taxpayers. In an amendment proposed during the House Natural Resources Committee meeting, Rep. Rosendale sought to ensure that a portion of the revenue generated from the stadium's operations would be allocated to the maintenance of the National Park System.

Under the current bill, the D.C. government would gain administrative control over federal land without any financial obligations to the taxpayers who own that land. This could potentially lead to subleasing and development without proper compensation. Rep. Rosendale's amendment aimed to address this concern by requiring 25 percent of the gross revenue from the stadium to be transferred back to the National Park System.

In support of his amendment, Rep. Rosendale stated, "While I support a strong economy everywhere, including in our nation's capital, I can't stand for U.S. taxpayers giving the D.C. government control of more property for free. I believe this Amendment strikes a fair compromise. It allows D.C. to obtain returns on its investments for maintenance, repairs, and management of the Campus while ensuring that the National Park System and taxpayers aren't ripped off."

By proposing this amendment, Rep. Rosendale aimed to protect the interests of American taxpayers and ensure that the revenue received by the D.C. government is used for the benefit of all Americans. The congressman's concern lies in preventing the D.C. government from gaining control over federal land without providing fair compensation.

The bill's transfer of Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium to the D.C. government may hold significant economic potential for the capital city. However, Rep. Rosendale believes that it is crucial to strike a balance between economic development and protecting the interests of taxpayers and the National Park System.

As this debate continues, it remains to be seen how the House Natural Resources Committee will decide on Rep. Rosendale's amendment and the overall bill. The congressman's efforts to ensure fair compensation for U.S. taxpayers in the transfer of the stadium highlight the importance of maintaining a transparent and equitable process when it comes to managing federal land.

The outcome of this legislative process will have implications not only for the D.C. government and the National Park System but for all Americans who contribute to the upkeep and preservation of federal land. It is essential for lawmakers to carefully consider the long-term consequences of their decisions and prioritize the interests of the taxpayers they represent.
